A personal blog beats any social network
Elon Musk buys Twitter
As the news on Elon Musk buying Twitter has blown up today, people are looking for alternatives to the bird app. I know a lot of people have moved to Mastodon (including myself), and while it’s a fantastic alternative, it still doesn’t beat blogging.
It’s a similar story for Instagram. As it moves towards video, photographers have been caught short and moved over to Vero. It’s a lovely app, and you can use it for sharing blog posts, but it’s still not as good as a personal blog.
Any of these platforms could go away tomorrow, and as long as you pay your hosting fees, your blog will likely remain another day.
Mastodon is great, but it has it’s downsides
I’ve actually seen Mastodon instances go down as server admins were unable to keep up with growth. The great thing about Mastodon is the fact you can export your data and move over to another Mastodon instance. No other platform has this power!
However, it can be an inconvenience, and if you don’t move quickly enough, you may not export your data in time to move to another instance.
Blogging is the place to be
I’ve had my blog for over 12 years now, and I’ve moved my data from hosting to hosting. I have also changed platforms multiple times. From WordPress, to other CMS and blogging apps, and I eventually came back to WordPress.
Every move, I have managed to keep all of my blog posts. The comments may have disappeared, and that was down to me not keeping the history of them. However, the most important part of my blog still remains intact.
Blogging can be started for free!
You can start a simple free blog with WordPress, Medium, and many other platforms. The possibilities are endless, and they can all be there to suit your personal needs.
